Cubed: The Designs and Thinking Behind Them

Cubed Team used "country campus" approach in designing IVE to help newcomers entering a VR world feel comfortable upon seeing familiar surroundings. Experienced VR users will enjoy noting the careful detail crafted into the objects and textures, some of which are unique to Cubed. Rather than classrooms, the Cubed world provides educators, students and anyone interested in the future of VR to have a pleasant place to gather for discussion and debate.

Meandering paths allow the "walking" visitor to see all the landscaping and visual extras we have placed throughout the world. Clickable signs help in finding the way around the Institute quickly and easily. There are also links to the sponsor's webpages, popular communication programs, and demonstrations of audio and visual webcasting, as well as teleports to Active Worlds help areas and other worlds.

The R&D area to the south is a showcase of unusual and interesting things to study. We also set aside a changing display area slightly north of GZ for objects created by guest artists.

By using a wide variety of structure designs, objects and avatars we hoped to make IVE visually interesting enough to encourage frequent return visitors, so that it would become "THE" world to go to when educators wished to actually experience virtual reality while meeting with colleagues or when introducing students to a VR world.
