The flight patch lets Lara hover, so she wouldn't fall. However, a non-flight-patch alternative could allow usage of up/down keys (i.e. +/-) to make her "fly" up/down.

Or how Active Worlds allows bypassing collision detection by holding a key down which also disables gravity. When the bypass collision detection key is released, the avatar falls (if it's on the same horizontal plane and there are no supporting polygons directly underneath). If the avatar "flew" up/down, it will stay hovering until it's put down on a polygon, where gravity will reenable. It's kind of weird, and I'd like to have a separate gravity toggle key/menu option, but it's an example of how another 3D program does it.
