I didn't mean to open a can of worms...
and Turbo's explaination of the TR3 tri solids
seems sensible.
I would favor the very simplest type:
a 45 degree triangular solid in the TopDown view...

of course, a user would have to be careful using this.
It seems that layered rooms would almost have to be "clones".
They would share all common tri solids where they their
elevations mate.

here is an example file to look at.
It's only the altered room mesh,
but gives an idea what it could do.
